Brief History of Joyce's

Joyce's Brief History

In 1944 Murt Joyce Snr opened a Hardware Warehouse at 7 North Main Street in Wexford Town. He had previously been employed further along the Main Street at Sinnott’s Hardware where Penny’s is now located. Joyce's store photo

Trading was challenging and Murt Joyce regularly cycled to Dublin to source products and often recounted how all signposts had been removed from the roadsides during the 2^nd World War. With dedication and hard work the business developed over the next 20 years and expanded considerably. With rural electrification, opportunities arose in the electric appliances and television market. Joyce’s became a household name in County Wexford and promoted strong product associations with brands such as Hoover, AGA, Calor Gas.

With expanded product lines, a move to a larger premises took place in the early 60’s at 1 South Main Street. A China and Gift Store followed and a second appliance store was opened at Custom House Quay. A dedicated Hardware Store opened in the 90’s at Anne Street. Joyce's Hardware

Murt’s sons, Derek and Murt Jnr had joined the business and due to continued growth it was decided to re-locate the electrical departments to a purpose built retail unit on the outskirts of town. A 16,000 sq ft premises was opened in August 2005 which has some of the most extensive and prominent displays to be found anywhere in Ireland. The hardware and gift shops were closed down and a Sony Centre was opened at 3 North Main Street. This was re-branded to an Expert store in 2010.

In September 2003 Joyces joined NATELEX (National Electronics Society Ltd) which traded as Expert.

Expert is a group of independent electrical retailers who combine their resources for the purpose of buying, marketing and retailing of electronic goods and household appliances in Ireland. Expert is present in 22 countries worldwide and has 7,400 stores.

This was a strategic move for Joyces to compete with the expansion of the multiple retailers and enabled them to avail of the significant advantages that collective buying power achieves as well as combined marketing, branding and product offering’s.

Joyce’s today continue to provide an extensive display of top brand names in appliances, television, audio, computers and household goods and with expertly trained staff can offer the same personal service and attention that Murth Joyce provided in his first store almost 70 years ago.
