Should I Buy a 12L or 20L Dehumidifier?

Picking up the right dehumidifier for your home comes down to a few key questions - how big is the space, how serious is the damp problem, and how often are you willing to empty the tank or maintain the unit? Dehumidifiers are rated by how many litres of moisture they can extract per day, and that number is the starting point for most buying decisions. But it is not the whole story, particularly in Irish conditions where temperatures are lower than the laboratory settings used for testing.

Start With the Size of the Problem, Not the Room

Many people assume capacity should match room size, and that is partly true. But the more important question is how much moisture the space actually generates. A small utility room where wet laundry is dried every day can produce more moisture than a large open-plan kitchen where the same issue does not exist. Think about where the damp is coming from - condensation, laundry, cooking, structural dampness - before settling on a capacity.

The Case for a 12L Model

If you are dealing with condensation in one or two rooms - window moisture, occasional mould on exterior walls, a bathroom that takes too long to dry out - a 12L dehumidifier is a practical and cost-effective solution. Units in this range from Dimplex offer reliable everyday performance and are straightforward to use. They are also lighter and easier to move between rooms if needed.

The limitation is that a 12L unit will struggle if you are trying to cover a large area or tackle a more significant damp problem. Running it continuously in a space that exceeds its capacity will wear it out faster and may not resolve the underlying issue.

The Case for a 20L Model

A 20L dehumidifier is the right choice for larger spaces, homes where multiple rooms have damp issues, or properties with structural damp that needs sustained management. Higher-capacity models from brands like Dyson and DeLonghi also tend to offer better energy efficiency over extended use because they reach the target humidity level faster and switch off sooner, rather than running for longer at a lower output.

If you dry laundry indoors regularly throughout the year - which is the reality for most Irish households - a 20L model with a dedicated laundry mode will make a noticeable difference to both drying time and overall indoor humidity.

A Practical Rule of Thumb

For a single room or a minor condensation issue, start with a 12L model. For whole-house management, a persistent damp problem or regular indoor laundry drying, go with a 20L. Either way, make sure the unit has a built-in humidistat so it stops running automatically when it has done its job - this will significantly reduce your running costs regardless of which capacity you choose.
